Between full animation and static images lies a fantastic, underutilized form of comic book storytelling called the “Motion Comic”.
Neal Adams’ Continuity Studios produced a run of the very best Motion Comic episodes ever done. It contains the much-loved first six issues of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s Astonishing X-Men run, featuring the return of Colossus to the X-Men Universe and the introduction of new characters like Special Agent Brand, S.W.O.R.D., Dr. Kavita Rao, Armor, Blindfold, and Ord of the Breakworld. The “mutant cure” plot was also the basis of the X-Men: The Last Stand movie plot.
Each panel is brought to life using JOHN CASSADAY’S art, not redrawn by a studio of lesser talents. The voices are real actors, the music was specially written for the series and not a single word, moment or image was changed or not used. This is not an “adaptation” of a comic series…it IS the comic series, but moving, alive and better (at least in our opinion) than most animation being done today.
As with all new things, some people were resistant but slowly this art form (and yes it IS a new art form) is catching on, with Marvel Comics leading the way. This is not full animation…it’s something different and better…something fascinating, unique and the wave of the future.
